Overview of the Mineral and Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) Bill 2018.

On 14 November 2018, the Queensland Parliament passed the Mineral and Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) Bill 2018. The bill acts as an important step towards implementing Queensland’s Mined Land Rehabilitation Policy and will feature a pooled financial provision fund and scheme manager.

The Act introduces two major reforms for the Queensland resource industry. It will:

  1. Replace the current financial assurance regime with a new financial provisioning scheme for all resource authorities to better deal with the environmental impacts of resource activities; and
  1. Introduce new progressive rehabilitation requirements for mining leases, through progressive rehabilitation and closure plans (PRC plans) for site specific application.

Lithium – Doing you a power of good!

Lithium is a chemical element with the symbol Li. It is not found in nature in its pure form but most commonly in igneous rock as well as lithium rich brine in salt lakes.  It was first discovered in 1817 by Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson when he analysed petalite ore, but it took a number of scientists to work out how to extract this soft, grey-white, alkaline metal.  Australia is the world’s leading producer of lithium, followed by Chile and Argentina.

MEC joins leaders at QEC and EY event

MEC Mining’s Kylie Smith and Andrew Dittmann had the opportunity to attend an event hosted by the Queensland Exploration Council and Ernst & Young (EY) last week in Brisbane.

The event focused on the findings of Ernst & Young’s latest report  “Top 10 Business Risks Facing Mining and Metals in 2019 -2020” and featured a panel discussion around the key talking topics of the report.

MEC Mining attends Queensland Resources Council’s State of the Sector Forum

The forum featured a panel of industry leaders who discussed the future of Australia’s energy production with a focus on Queensland as the primary contributor of energy for the east coast.

MEC’s Maria Joyce makes top 100 global list

Although we’d expect nothing less of our MEC Mining powerhouse Maria Joyce, we’re delighted to share that she has been named one of the world’s top 100 women in mining.

Non-profit UK organisation Women in Mining (WIM) has named Maria, MEC’s General Manager – Strategy and Business Development, as one of its ‘Top 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining’. Their search extended across the entire mining sector, including related and supporting industries, and all roles, ‘from mine to office, from explorers to C-Suite, from finance to compliance and ESG to government/non-government agencies’.
