Case Study – Dragline Design

INTRODUCTION MEC enabled a productive open cut coal mine to optimise an existing dragline operation, thereby decreasing truck and shovel use and maintaining coal targets. The company approached MEC to provide an analysis of options that would maintain budgeted coal uncovery while maximising dragline efficiency in a key operational pit. MEC presented a diverse range of options that allowed the client to prepare for any possible scenario. MEC prepared short term designs and plans and presented key findings that enabled the client to prioritise areas of the pit.

MEC Needs your Help to Help Others

MEC’s Managing Director Simon Cohn is taking part in this year’s Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout. It’s the third time he’s taken part in the event which gives ordinary Australians the chance to walk a mile in the shoes of a homeless person.

The Vinnies CEO Sleepout offers just a small glimpse into life on the streets. There are over 100,000 Australians who are homeless, sleeping rough each night. Each participant is asked to raise awareness of homelessness in Australia through their participation in the event. They are also asked to raise money for the St. Vincent de Paul Society through an online sponsorship for their sleep out.

How to Plan Dozer Push

The 5 P’s are important in Bulk Dozer Push. Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Simply pegging out the pivot point and letting the dozers loose can result in lost opportunities. One of the most effective ways to design dozer push is using sections, then joining the sections to make 3D surfaces. Firstly, evaluate the pivot point location – should it be the standard projection from coal edge or is there an advantage in raising the pivot line?

When to consider bulk dozer push?

When to Consider Bulk Dozer Push?

Bulk dozer push is applicable to a range of situations and can be applied in flat dip strip mines and steep dip mines using apparent dip stripping.  Bulk dozer push uses the void created by coal mining to move material to spoil cheaply.  Generally, dozer push is applicable to spoil up to 60m above the basal seam, with prestrip applied to the upper waste as the depth to coal increases.

Bulk Dozer Push

How much can Bulk Dozer Push save you?

Bulk dozer push costs are typically between $1.30 and $2.00 per bcm, and compare favourably with truck shovel costs of up to $4.00 per bcm.  Bulk dozer push can be applied in most situations where the coal dip is less than 20 degrees, offsetting other more expensive methods.  As the low capital alternative to a dragline, dozers are inexpensive to purchase and move more material per operator hour than all but the largest of excavator fleets.
