Rapid Resource Evaluation for Copper-Gold Development in South America

Challenge

Our client faced the need to rapidly evaluate multiple legacy resource models to determine the feasibility of developing mining operations capable of supporting a set production profile. The technical reports were in Spanish, using legacy block model formats and historical grade estimation methods, creating a barrier for timely assessment.

Legacy data formats, proportional rotated sub-blocking, and varying attribute structures meant that careful interpretation was critical. The client also needed cost models to support a Latin American contract mining operation.

Approach

  1. AI-Assisted Translation & Data Processing: Large technical reports were converted from Spanish to English using AI-assisted workflows, enabling our team to quickly interpret critical geological and operational data.
  2. Advanced Block Model Handling: Block models exceeding Excel limits were imported into specialist software. MEC’s team interpreted origin, extents, and block size properties where none were provided, maintaining data integrity for robust evaluation.
  3. Cost Model Benchmarking: MEC’s in-house database was leveraged to build relevant cost models, escalated to current market conditions. Comparable operations and NI 43-101 reports provided a solid reference framework for financial assumptions.
  4. Pit Optimisation & Strategic Evaluation: Using Deswik Pseudoflow, MEC conducted pit optimisation studies to rapidly assess the potential of each resource model. This allowed our client to identify viable investment opportunities with confidence.

Outcome

  • Multiple assets successfully identified for development.
  • Rapid, reliable resource evaluation enabled timely interaction with vendors and RFIs.
  • MEC established itself as a trusted advisor, supporting long-term project evaluation and execution planning.
  • Client is now progressing several assets into detailed study phases with MEC’s continued engagement.

Key Impact: Long-term client partnership and confidence in MEC’s ability to turn complex, legacy data into clear investment insights.

Conclusion

MEC will continue to support further rapid resource evaluations, preparing study frameworks and project management teams for additional Latin American resource areas. The objective is to maintain momentum and ensure that the client can act swiftly on emerging opportunities.
