MEC Mining is committed to promoting diversity across the organisation.  At the recent Women in Industry Awards dinner in Sydney, General Manager Maria Joyce was announced as the winner of the Excellence in Mining Award. MMD, who sponsored the category, dedicated this award to raising awareness for women in a male dominated industry.

This is an outstanding achievement for Maria who was recognised for her leadership, mentoring and technical expertise.  In her acceptance speech she said she was honoured by the award and acknowledged the incredible women in her category.

Maria also reflected on her journey in the resources sector to date and said, “For me, it’s about making a difference. Every morning that I wake up and go to work, I want to make a difference; for the mining industry, the people I mentor and all of the mining engineers I work with”.

The judges said that Maria was a deserving winner who has “taken risks in her own career, backed herself to succeed and become an outstanding and well respected leader in her own right”.

“She demonstrated an outstanding mix of technical expertise, commercial tenacity and willingness to develop the next generation of leaders,” one judge said.

Managing Director Simon Cohn said, “It was great to see Maria’s efforts recognised by the industry and to be selected as the winner out of a very capable and impressive field of finalists. Congratulations Maria on behalf of the MEC team, we are incredibly proud of you”.
